Introduction:

The National Centre for Policy Research (NCPR) was established by Konrad Adenauer Foundation of Germany and MoHE on the campus of Kabul University in May 2003 to serve as a research and training facility in the fields of Law & Political Science, Economics, and Social Sciences. Bringing together Afghan expertise and international experience, the NCPR provides a forum for discussion of and research into policy-related subjects in these fields.

Headlines

NCPR-CIPE Roundtable NCPR-CIPE had a roundtable on “Informal Economy and Replacing it with Formal Economy in Afghanistan” on 30th of March 2011 at Inter-Continental Hotel. The foundational problems and basic activities of informal economy were discussed and the effective practical ways of solving these problems were suggested.

“Painting for Peace” Project Completed
Painting for Peace project initiated by the Department of Peace Studies of NCPR which portrayed 25 tableaus to promote peace and the importance of peace was completed successfully.

Research on “Perspectives on Peace Process in Afghanistan”
The Department of Peace Studies of NCPR has begun a research project on “Perspectives on Peace Process in Afghanistan after the Second Presidential Election”. This project is seeking to find out, evaluate and signify different positions and point of views regarding peace process in the country.

Seminar on “Regional Cooperation: Long term Stabilization of Afghanistan”
On March 09, 2011 a seminar was held in NCPR’s conference room on Regional Cooperation: Long Term Stabilization of Afghanistan by Dr. Shanthie Mariet D’Souza, a researcher of National University of Singapore. Around 16 Afghan academics and researchers participated in addition to NCPR’s senior staff. Dr. D’Souza talked about the results of her studies on regional cooperation, challenges and potentials.

Participating in “Prevention of Armed Conflict in South Asia”
Associate Prof. Hakimi, Head of Law Department of NCPR participated in the Regional Steering Group meeting of the Global Partnership for Prevention of Armed Conflict in South Asia on 15th and 16th of February, 2011 in Sri Lanka, Colombo.

The Two Lecturers of Kabul University Trip to Germany
Two trainers of ''Presidential Election-Duties and Responsibilities of Media'' seminar and lecturers of Journalism Faculty of Kabul University traveled to Germany through DW- AKADEMIE by mediation of NCPR for two weeks. The journalists of the mentioned program are also included among the 12 invitees. This group will perceive the duties specially the reporting of German Journalists in European Parliamentary Elections that will be held on 7th of June 2009.

Through its research, the NCPR aims to provide policy advice on current and general issues,
as well as establishing a sound basis for academic advancement and research in universities throughout Afghanistan. The NCPR has four departments that presently concentrate on some of the crucial issues related to the current transition of Afghanistan and the changes that are taking place in society, the political and economic systems:

Department of Law and Political Sciences

Department of Peace Studies

The new established Department of Peace Studies offers facilitation to Research, Counseling and Education of Peace Building, Civil Conflict Resolution and Human Development.

  • Conducting workshops and long-term consulting on the subject methods of Peace Building and Civil Conflict Resolution.
  • Providing trainings in scientific working and support to research approaches with a focus on Peace Building.
  • Organizing teacher trainings and facilitating a Network of Peace Education.
  • Strengthen cooperation and knowledge transfer between Afghan Universities and abroad.
  • Development of training material for Peace Building and Conflict Resolution.

In addition to conducting research into these and other topics, the NCPR organizes national and regional conferences, seminars and workshops to encourage broad discussion of the issues and disseminate research findings.
