GERMAN-AFGHAN RESEARCH FORUM (GARF III) and Peace Building Training Program for Lecturers

The NCPR and the Centre for Policy and Human Development (CPHD) launched a post graduate training program in human development and social research methods for the lecturers of the Six Social Sciences Faculties of Kabul University, Education University, Alberoni University and the members of governmental and nongovernmental organizations. was funded by UNDP/ USIP.
In order to extend the research culture in the remote areas of Afghanistan, a short-term training course on scientific research methodology was devised for 40 members and Lecturers of different organizations and the number participants were 34. The integrated faculties were the Faculty of Law & Political Science, Economics, Social Science, Sharia, Journalism and Psychology and Education, and Languages and Literature of Kabul University. Participants of the Academy of Sciences of Afghanistan, Polytechnic University of Kabul, Education University, Albiriony University of Kapisa Province, few participants from the ministry of Foreign Affairs, participants from the Afghan Women Network, Ministry of Justice, and one participant of the Control and Evaluation Office was a part of this short-term training program.
The trainers were employed to teach the different sessions of the course, including the members of different faculties of Kabul University with post-graduate degrees obtained from Universities abroad.
There were three sessions’ classes each week; Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, The classes were three hours and were taken place in the afternoons from 1:00 - 4:00 pm. A 15-minute break was also took place for refreshments half way through every session.
The following projects are under way under the direct supervision of the heads of departments and will be completed in 2009.
1. Narcotics addiction and its effects on Human Development in Kabul
2. Cause of increasing prices of basic food stuff during the last year in Kabul
3. The Street Children of Kabul and Their Human Development Necessities
4. The level of satisfaction of medical services in private hospitals in Kabul
5. Poverty and its effect on district No.8 residents of Kabul.
6. The Gender issue among Kabul University Lecturers

GERMAN-AFGHAN RESEARCH FORUM (GARF III) for Students

Follow up of the NCPR’s trainings, the research methodology course for 36 top students of seven faculties of Kabul University was held from 19th October 2008-13th November 2008 for 20 days.

The Forum is envisaged as having 4 main objectives:
• To strengthen the links between the Center and the corresponding Faculties at Kabul University (KU).
• To promote the culture of research at these faculties
• To train both faculty and top students in research methodology on an intensive and ongoing basis.
• To create a pool of researchers from which the Centre would draw for carrying out its own research projects, and offer researchers to other institutions in Kabul.
In order to familiarize the research methodologies tradition in the maximum areas of Afghanistan, and achieve the above objectives a short-term training course in scientific research methodology was launched and devised for 36 top students of seven faculties of Kabul University:
1. Law and political Sciences
2. Economics
3. Social Science
4. Journalism
5. Psychology and Education
6. Shariyat
7. language and literature

The trainers employed to teach the different sections of the course, included the members of different faculties of Kabul University with postgraduate degrees obtained from Universities abroad.

The course was designed for 20 lecture days from 19th October to 13th November 2008, Sunday to Thursday from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM with a 15-minutes break for refreshment.

At the end of GARF III program trainees were divided into groups of 3 and 4, asked to conduct a short research. For this purpose they were asked to submit two topics to the Centre from which one was selected by the Department Heads for empirical research. Trainees are given a period of 3 months from 21st Mach-21st June 2009 to complete their researches and submit to the Center. During this time, the Centre Heads of Departments will be available for further assistance and guidance.
At the end, the NCPR will have 7 small projects as another achievement in research field.

Upon satisfactory completion of the course and submission of a final practical project, trainees will be awarded Certificates of Attendance. These will fall into three grades of A, B and C. Each final research project will be grade on the basis of the following criteria:

• Systematic use of research methodology, including data collection methods
• Coherence of hypothesis
• Coherence of analysis
• Presentation
• Grammar and language

The certificate has three categories:
A = Excellent
B = Good
C = Satisfactory

All the trainees will be graded into A, B, and C, the under few points told to the trainees to adopt in order to get the GRADE A
Such as
• 80% of attendance, during the entire GARF program
• Submitting a good research project at the end (in group)

Therefore, the students will be evaluated on their presence during the course, the project they would submit and their participation in the daily activities.
